For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share - Australian Anthem
I'm an Australian, not a proud Australian right now. Just an Australian. Right about now my country disturbs me. The lyrics of our anthem are a lie (see above), ask the UN. They've officially found that Australia's treatment of asylum seekers are equal to torture. Our country has breached international laws. Seriously. How is this alright with us? Why is there no fighting for basic human rights? Why are we not finding ways to help these people? Some are fleeing situations more horrific than we can ever imagine but our government simply pulls the doona up over it's head and hums a happy tune.
It isn't just asylum seekers who are stuffed, take a look at our indigenous communities... No wait, you might not be able to. Our government is shutting those down. The peoples of our land, the ones that were here long before the white folk "discovered" this country are being forced out of their home. Pushed out of their homes, stripped of all they know. Isn't this something that already happened? Didn't we say sorry for that? Sorry guys, but you know we didn't really mean it. What we mean is fuck you. Fuck you to the people who should have the most entitlement. Fuck you to the people whose roots make up our culture.
Our low income earners struggle to pay for the bare minimum; rent, food and electricity whilst people like the Rineheart's squabble over who has control of certain portions of their billion dollar inheritance. How can there be people who are worth billions and yet so many are dying of starvation? So many are homeless?
Today the whole world is celebrating America. Celebrating the 4-5 votes that has now legalised marriage for all, irregardless of sexual orientation. That whole country has joined many others in saying LOVE IS LOVE whilst Australia says NO. Our Prime Minister has a sister who is a lesbian, but he still says no. It's still wrong. This morning my chap's niece informed me that she was sick of reading all the "gay stuff" on Facebook. She is 17 and catholic. She tried to tell me why exactly the catholic church opposes gay marriage. I had to explain (something she already knows) why I am opposed to the catholic church. I then had to point out that she has two gay Aunts and then I instructed her to watch 'It Could Happen To You', made by Shane Bitney Crone after his long time partner Tom Bridegroom passed away https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pR9gyloyOjM. She decided that yes it was sad and it doesn't seem right but I suspect her religion holds her to her original thought path.
There is something so very wrong with a country whose leader has no compassion, no empathy, no sense of pride. If you are not white, wealthy and religious apparently you don't matter.
This is not what I want for my children to know as 'normal' so I speak my opinions. I read. I research and I try my hardest to promote change. Imagine a country where people matter. Where we don't care about size, race, gender, sexuality and income, just people loving and taking care of people.
